SoCal ROC Media Design Students Honored in "Visions of Unity" Contest
High School students from SoCal ROC and from Torrance area high schools were honored for their creative work at the annual "Visions of Unity" contest. The contest encourages students to express their creativity in the areas of art, photography, new media, sculpture, essay, short story and poetry with an emphasis on unity among diverse groups within the community. The main theme of the contest was inspired Dr. Martin Luther King whose birthday comes on or near the contest's deadline every year.
Three students from SoCal ROC received awards for their entrees in the "New Media" category: Amanda Shields, a senior at Redondo Union High School, received first place for her "From the Same Roots" artwork; Lilian Candelaria, a senior at Torrance High School, received second place for her "Communication is Unity"; and Christian Sanchez, a senior at Inglewood High School, received third place for his "The real diamonds in life are the bond we have with one another." All three students are honing their innovative skills at the SoCal ROC's School of Art/Media and Entertainment.
The contest recognition reception was held on Monday, March 26, 2012, at Torrance Memorial Medical Center's Health Conference. Ms. Shields, Ms. Candelaria, and Mr. Sanchez attended the reception with SoCal ROC's Media Design instructor, Giti Azizi.
The competition was sponsored by the Human Relations Forum of Torrance with Torrance Memorial Medical Center, Volunteer Center-South Bay-Harbor-Long Beach, Torrance Unified School District, League of Women Voters of Torrance Area and Palos Verdes Chapter LINKS Inc.
