Hillard Smith

Director of Secondary Education/Principal

Hillard Smith began his educational career in 1994 when he taught Language Arts and Social Studies in the Centinela Valley Union High School District. Over his 10 year tenure in Centinela Valley, he served as a teacher, club advisor, Activities Director, Project Facilitator, and Dean of Students. Mr. Smith co-developed a Leadership and Human Development program at Leuzinger High School which became the model for several schools throughout Los Angeles County. He received a commendation from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for the success of that program and the positive change it created at the school. After several “Teacher of the Year” accolades, he was honored by NBC 4 and former Mayor Richard Riordan as one of LA’s most inspirational teachers. In 2004, Mr. Smith accepted an assignment in the Inland Empire where he served as a High School Assistant Principal in the Riverside Unified School District. He helped to close the achievement gap amongst underrepresented students and addressing issues of equity in the educational and extracurricular programs. After six years in Riverside, Mr. Smith took his talents and experience to the city where he grew up and served as the Director of Pupil Personnel Services and Child Welfare & Attendance for the Inglewood Unified School District. While serving as both a district level and site level administrator, Mr. Smith helped to improve the image and culture of the schools within IUSD. In 2018, Mr. Smith joined the administrative team at the Southern California Regional Occupational Center (SoCal ROC), where he now serves as Director of Secondary Education/Principal.

Mr. Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in Psychology from California State University Northridge. He went on to earn a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in marriage, family, and child counseling from Pepperdine University. A few years later, he earned another master’s degree in Educational Administration from California State University Dominguez Hills. Mr. Smith is married with five children and enjoys spending time with his family. In his spare time, he enjoys bike riding, hiking, reading, fitness activities, martial arts, traveling, writing, entrepreneurship, and mentoring youth.
